Michael Jackson’s Million Dollar Memorial
July 13th, 2009 by Evan
According to the mayor’s office, the public memorial service for the King of Pop Michael Jackson cost Los Angeles a cool $1.4 million! Expenses for last week’s event included having extra police on the streets, trash pickup, sanitation and traffic control. It took 3,000 police officers and about a third of the LA force to keep the event running smoothly. The city set up a website asking for the singer’s fans to donate money to take the financial burden off of LA, which is already in debt for $530 million. Hundreds of people gave over $17,000 through the site. It would have been more but the high volume of traffic on the site caused it to crash repeatedly, putting it out of commission for at least 12 hours on the day of the memorial.
