The BBC apologised for swearing by the American band Rage Against the Machine on its Radio Five channel.

The profanity occurred before a live performance of the song Killing In The Name. The band was on a live link-up from the US. The song, in turn, is hot contest for the Number One spot on the charts against Joe McElderry, winner of the X-Factor. The race has sparked a near culture war.

A BBC spokesman said: “We had spoken to the band repeatedly beforehand and they had agreed not to swear. When they did, we faded the band out and said sorry immediately. We apologise again to anyone who was offended.”

In the incident, the lead singer, Zack de la Rocha, was heard swearing four times on the station’s breakfast show.
