The guys did not outshine the girls of American Idol this week but I have to give kudos to a couple of them who definitely stepped it up from their previous performances. Lee Dewyze sang Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’. While he may not be the best singer, he is getting better. He just needs to get his pitch under control. Alex Lambert sang ‘Trouble’ and showed off the unique quality of his vocals. Tim Urban finally sang on key with Jeff Buckley’s ‘Hallelujah’. He picked a great song and sang it with great emotion. Andrew Garcia fell short with Christina Aguilera’s ‘Genie in a Bottle’ but you could tell he was trying. Casey James sang Keith Urban’s ‘You’ll Think of Me’. I think he does much better with the country vibe. Aaron Kelly has to be the worst of the night as he was all over the place with ‘I’m Already There’. Todrick did Queen’s ‘Somebody to Love’ with a gospel vibe that most likely didn’t sit well with a lot of people. Best performance overall including the girls goes to Mike Lynch who sang Maxwell’s ‘This Woman’s Work’. That definitely blew everyone away!

Despite a few health problems that might have prevented her from performing last night, the American Idol contestant clearly demonstrated that this old bird is not licked yet. Her rendition of “Long As I Can See the Light” by Creedence Clearwater Revival pretty much knocks the judges off their seats… even the infamous Simon Cowell admits to it: “I completely misunderestimated you from last week. … This was like the moment we realized with Kelly Clarkson that we’ve got a really serious artist here.” Misunderstimated? What devious plans are running through the Earl of Exigency’s head one must wonder… but whatever they are, it does look like, at least for this week, Crystal Bowersox is safer than any other of the female contestants.

The American Idol airplay chart is the perfect battleground for all of Simon Cowell’s little minions. There they can show off their stuff and prove which one is the best of the whole American Idol litter. Kelly Clarkson is so far reigning queen, but it looks like Kris Allen is getting closer and closer to the spot and it doesn’t look good for her. Adam Lambert is also climbing up the charts and he may yet get a chance to pay Kris Allen back for the last season of the show… even though he still has a quite some ground to cover. How proud the Earl of Exigency must be to see them all do battle so well!

Even if not by her own accord, the American Idol contestant will be flying back to Florida after the first week of the season. It looks like it was either her or Katie Stevens and America chose to send Janell Wheeler home. Still, she doesn’t seem to see this as the judges’ fault: “I had a feeling, you know, definitely wrong song choice. I messed up in Hollywood Week. I really wanted a chance to play my guitar and do what I do best one more time.” She even gets herself together for one final performance of “What about love”, but unfortunately, even if it had moved the Earl of Exigency to tears, it wouldn’t be enough to cancel her flight.

Simon Cowell left American Idol viewers stunned last night when he branded one of the female judges a “cougar”.
The music mogul unleashed the insult after a wannabe pop star left Kara DioGuardi hot under the collar.
“What I really liked about you was you absolutely chose the right song. It came over as very honest, very sincere. You came over as very likeable,” he told 27-year-old Casey James. “Obviously the cougar here loves you,” he added.
The jibe – a nickname for an older woman who sexually pursues younger men – made the live studio audience gasp and astonished DioGuardi, 39. “Cougar? Who are you calling a cougar?” she asked.
Previously, however, the singer-songwriter had made no secret of her attraction to James.
“Casey, I don’t recognise you with your shirt on first off … the last time we saw each other,” she joked. “It was hard for me to listen to that. I’m married …”
Even fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres teased: “It was very hard for me to hear. I could feel Kara undressing you with her eyes. I could not even focus.”

It does seem that a breath of fresh air is needed around this sector as all American Idol-related record sales seem to have gone down the past week. Maybe it is just a minor setback before the great revelation that is to be this season even though the female performances of last night were not as amazing as was hoped. Still, there is promise of the future and that promise probably has The X Factor written all over it. After all, Simon Cowell may be a good sport, but when it comes to sinking your own boat, the Earl of Exigency is probably not that good a captain.

Simon Cowell’s friends and peers have reacted with surprise to the news of his sudden engagement to Mezghan Hussainy, 36.
X-Factor judge Louis Walsh said: “I’m very very surprised but I’m delighted he’s got engaged. Mish is a lovely girl. They’ve been close for a long time but it’s only in the last few months that it’s got serious. She is fantastic for him, very grounding, which is exactly what he needs to keep that ego in check.”
Sinitta, who is one of the many ex-girlfriends with whom Cowell has stayed friends, said:”They are really in love. She’s a really lovely girl. I hope to be a bridesmaid.”
Cowell is said to have proposed to Hussainy on Valentine’s Day and presented her with a £250,000 Graff diamond ring.
A close friend said: “Simon’s asked us all to keep quiet about the engagement because I think, after everything he’s said over the years, he’s a bit embarrassed by it. He’s totally smitten with Mezhgan and knows there’s nothing she wants more than to get married with a nice stylish wedding and start a family. It’s something his mum would love as well. Turning 50 a few months ago made him think seriously about the future.”

It’s official – this season of American Idol will be the last for Simon Cowell. Now that he’s launching the X Factor in America, which is set to debut on 2011, Simon will be busy serving as executive producer and judge. As for AI, it may have met its doom considering that Fox has picked up the X Factor for broadcast, yet the network is planning 3 more seasons of AI. Although it seems like the same show, the difference is that X Factor split the talent into 4 groups and each one is mentored by one of the judges. Mind you, Simon is walking away from $36 million per season from AI. Is it worth it?

It seems the famous judge of American Idol might be leaving the show for good. Simon Cowell’s contract with American Idol expires next May and he is apparently very keen on bringing The X Factor to the USA… so much so that the show is already set to start for 2011. So it looks like Simon Cowell might not be joining the judging team on American Idol next season. But he doesn’t really leave… not really, Simon Cowell never leaves, he only expands his empire and if The X Factor is getting into the USA, it only means everything is going according to the master plan.

The most recent American Idol star has finally released the full info on his upcoming album “For your entertainment”. It seems Adam Lambert has gathered quite the number of performers for his release, people such as Lady GaGa, Pink and also American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. Did he manage to lure them in all by himself, or did he have some help from Simon Cowell one must wonder. Either way, it looks like Adam Lambert is on the sure fire road to commercial success: big names, glittering stars and a Simon Cowell-show training. The future looks bright for this lad!

Simon Cowell has been giving £100,000 a year to Exorcist child star Linda Blair’s dogs’ home.
Cowell, who spends half of his time in Los Angeles, is a leading supporter of the home for abandoned mutts Blair started in the Toluca Lake area.
A friend told the Sun newspaper: “Simon is a huge dog lover but because he’s always travelling he can’t have one. He thought it would be a great idea to help Linda out. He doesn’t like to talk about it as he sees it as a private arrangement.”
Blair’s Regan was possessed in the cult 1973 thriller. In recent years, the actress has exercised a keen interest in animal-welfare causes.
Her website states: “Due to the difficult times upon us, we are searching for every means possible to continue supporting animals who desperately need our help.”
The connection may lie in Cowell’s long history of supporting dog charities. He has expressed a desire to leave part of his £120 million bachelor’s fortune to a dogs’ home, saying, “I’ve never made a will and don’t want to think about death. I’d have to leave some to a dogs’ charity.”

Since being recently released from his contract with RCA, Clay Aiken has finally found a new home. The singer’s new label, Decca, confirmed the news to several media outlets and released a statement saying “Clay Aiken signs record deal with Universal Music’s Decca Records. Expect an album in the first half of 2010. Keep checking back for more details to come.” I wonder if a new sound to the American Idol alum’s music is what comes with his new record label. Will we still be hearing the old Clay with all of his ballads or will he change it up even just a bit?

When 3 former Evanescence members and one American Idol finalist formed The Fallen, they should have at least done a bit of research. The Fallen is already a band and they are pissed. Legal papers have been sent to the new band demanding a cease and desist order. The new band has now renamed themselves as We Are The Fallen. Well that’s a big leap from the first try. What? Couldn’t they get their creative juices flowing? I wonder if new lead singer Carly Smithson will be lending a hand when it comes to writing the rest of the band’s album.

In an attempt to drum up more press, the label head responsible for releasing Adam Lambert’s old recordings is speaking out. John Hecker, CEO of Hi Fi Recordings claims that the American Idol runner up co-wrote the tracks on his album ‘On with the Show’ which the label plans to release this summer. Adam said he was only hired as a studio singer. Hecker told Billboard another story though saying “The music’s amazing. There are some up tempo [songs], there’s some that rock a little more, and there are some songs on the same tip as Want. It’s a real album that’s coming out, not just a conglomerate of a bunch of songs. This is all original material — as a matter of fact, Adam wrote a lot of it.” Interesting.

The singer has recently revealed that she has a stalker. Jordin Sparks shared the following story: “I had the same cell phone number since seventh grade up to last summer, so a lot of people had my number. Somebody thought it would be funny to post it on MySpace. Loads of people got my number, and I had this person texting me going, ‘I know this is you. I know this is you, why don’t you answer? I know this is you, why don’t you answer? I’m going to keep calling you.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ and I had people leaving me voice messages and text messages, so in the end I changed my number.” Well, there are stalkers and there are stalkers… this one just seems to be a bit of a maniac that’s all. Maybe he’s one of the many broken souls of the American Idol show… lord only knows there are plenty of those.

Kris Allen has officially signed a record deal with 19 Recordings/Jive Records. It was also announced that his debut album will be released this fall. The 23-year old American Idol champ said in a statement “As exciting as the last few months have been, I’m really looking forward to what is next. Everyone’s been asking me what [my album's] going to sound like. It will be very similar to what you heard from me on the show — definitely in the pop/rock genre. I can’t wait to get started!” I can’t hear what he has to offer too. I hope there are songs on there like his rendition of Kanye West’s ‘Heartless’.

Nearly two weeks may have passed since the announcement of this year’s American Idol but not having Adam Lambert announced as the winner still has a lot of people talking. Sources at the show say that the margin between Kris Allen and his runner up wasn’t even close. And the biggest factor that they attribute that margin to was Danny Gokey. Apparently, the so-called lion’s share of Danny’s votes went to Kris. The extent of the margin surprised a lot of the execs on the show. The exact number of votes won’t be revealed but sources say that the AT&T scandal had no impact on the outcome as the spread was that wide. Wow!

American Idol fans watching at home weren’t able to see Carrie Underwood limp off of the stage after her performance last week. But Ryan Seacrest was able to get the country singer to talk about it on his morning radio show. Carrie said “You’re gonna laugh at me – everyone does.” The American Idol alum then explained that she fell and suffered a minor injury while running in Nashville. She also said that a neighbor of hers came to the rescue. Carrie said “This nice lady was driving behind me — I’d never met her before. She saw the incident and was nice enough to pull over and roll down the window and say, ‘Can I take you home?…So I fought back tears and she took me home!”

Former American Idol finalist, MICHAEL JOHNS will be performing his new single “Heart on My Sleeve” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show next Monday, May 25th. The Aussie vocalist will be releasing his first post-Idol solo album, Hold Back My Heart on June 23rd. Encouraged by his mentor David Foster, who invited Johns to appear on his star-studded David Foster And Friends PBS special in December 2008, Johns chose the road less traveled, and for the first time in his adult life, went to work on an album with no deal in place. “Foster always said that the secret of his success is to look at whatever lane is open in the music industry and take it,” Johns recalls. “And the way my record combines old and new, I could open for Alicia Keys one night and John Mayer the next, it’s right in the middle.” Songwriter Diane Warren, who penned the knee-buckling ballad “Heart Is Weak,” was another key endorsement. “There’s nothing more validating than having these heavyweights behind you,” says Johns. “It’s like screw winning American Idol when people like David Foster and Diane Warren are saying you have the real thing here.”
With an album completed and ready to turn in, Johns had the rare freedom to shop it around, and when Downtown Records, home to Gnarls Barkley, Cold War Kids and Santigold, showed interest in a licensing deal, he jumped at the opportunity to finally control his own fate. “I think we’re in the most exciting period of music ever, because there’s so many ways to do it,” he says. And like most of his plans thus far, Johns is thinking big for his future. “The live show is going to be great,” he says excitedly. “I might even take it old school with different bands in different towns — almost like what Chuck Berry and all those guys used to do.”
Tune in to see Michael Johns on The Ellen DeGeneres Show next Monday, May 25th. Check your local listings for times.
