With the tons of performances from some of the music industry’s biggest players, it should come as no surprise that the two-hour American Idol season finale on Fox dominated the ratings on Wednesday night with a 17.1 rating/27 share from 8 to 10 PM. The reality TV singing competition did even better in the ratings than last year’s finale which scored a 16.0/25 share. Basically, people are still watching American Idol even without Simon Cowell and after all those format changes. I think it’s safe to say that there will be a couple more seasons of the show in the future.
Can I just say how much I loved the finale of this season of American Idol? While the format has changed drastically, I can’t deny that I enjoyed the boat load of performances that they had. One of my favorites was Casey Abrams with Jack Black on Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls”. The fact that both singers were in matching jacked and tie ensembles with dancing girls in skimpy neon outfits just made this performance a riot to watch. Some may say that they butchered the song but I think they were both just having a ton of fun with it so I liked it.

David Cook was on hand last night for the final performance episode of American Idol season 10. The singer took the stage to perform his rendition of the Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, which is being used as the farewell song for contestants this season. David has always been a great and enjoyable watch for me, which just made me miss the idea of having a rock star in the finale. I have nothing against Scotty McCreery or Lauren Alaina but having two country singers, and teenagers at that, just made for a boring night. I was actually more excited about David’s performance compared to all three rounds combined.

It looks like the good people of the show have found the perfect man to perform on next week’s big finale. Actually, it’s two men: U2’s legendary Bono and The Edge. Of course this is not all without purpose as the two would be performing songs from their Broadway Spider-Man musical. It seems that the producers are currently negotiating with them regarding their appearance on the show as a source relates: ”They are talking to Fox about how it would work. Ideally, Bono and The Edge would perform and be joined on stage by the ‘Spider-Man’ cast. If everyone agrees, with millions watching, it could be great for the production.” Well it certainly might be a good thing for Bono and The Edge to promote their musical, but if you get these two on stage, wouldn’t you rather have them perform at least one or two U2 songs as well? It would certainly serve the ratings very well.

The American Idol contestant has apparently managed to secure herself a place on the show’s finals with her performances of last night. Even though she might have given her best a bit too soon, it looks like Haley Reinhart is certainly heading for fame. Her most prominent performance of the night was Led Zeppelin’s “What Is and What Should Never Be” with which she managed to completely blow away the judges and the audience. She also backed that up very well with Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”. So it looks pretty darn clear that Hailey Reinhart is going to be one of the finalists on this year’s season of American Idol.

If you think that Haley Reinhart took a little extra heat from the judges during the performance episode of American Idol this past Wednesday after singing “Earth Song”, you’re not alone. Heck, you even have some company in high places. AI executive producer Nigel Lythgoe took to his Twitter after the show with some praise for the targeted singer. Nigel sent out three tweets, with two of those having praise for the top 4, both of which put Haley on the receiving end. Nigel tweeted “’I, Who Have Nothing’ was my favorite performance tonight” and “I personally feel Haley is the most improved contestant”. I wonder if he was trying to keep things a little more balanced.

For the first round, James Durbin sang “Don’t Stop Believin’”; Haley Reinhart took on “Earth Song”; Scotty McCreery performed “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning”; and Lauren Alaina sang “Anyway”.
The second round of American Idol top 4 performances were for songs written by Leiber and Stoller. Haley Reinhart sang “I (Who Have Nothing)” and killed it. I think it was one of the best performances this season. Scotty McCreery sang “Young Blood” and did absolutely nothing for me. His overall performance was just too weird. Lauren Alaina sang “Trouble” and I’m glad that she went out of her comfort zone. On top of that, she had a very good vocal. Finally, James Durbin sang “Love Potion No. 9”. It’s a better choice of songs, a better vocal and overall a better show. I was so ready to write this show off as the worst until round 2. I’m glad most of them stepped it up.

Liv Tyler has outed her father Steven for stealing clothes from her wardrobe. The actress revealed her Aerosmith rocker dad often rummages through her outfits and pinches pieces he likes. She told New York magazine: “My dad wears girls’ clothes – it’s so funny. And sometimes I see him and I’m like, ‘Nice shirt!’, because it’s from my closet.” Talking about his role as a judge on American Idol, Liv added that seeing him on the panel thrills her. “I speak his language, I understand what he’s talking about,” she said. “I feel really proud of him. I think he’s a really amazing, magical man and all those funny things that he says that people find so strange, my whole life I’ve been hearing them and they make me laugh.”
The theme for this week’s American Idol was “Now and Then”. The remaining singers were asked to perform one modern song and one from the 60s. Modern songs came first and James Durbin kicked things off with “Closer to the Edge”. Jacob Lusk sang “No Air”. Lauren Alaina took on “Flat on the Floor”. Scotty McCreery sang “Gone”. And Haley Reinhart did “You and I”. For the 60s music, James sang “Without You”. Jacob sang “Love Hurts”. Lauren performed “Unchained Melody”. Scotty did “Always on My Mind” and Haley sang “House of the Rising Sun”. Those were some interesting choices for the contestants. What was your favorite performance of the night?

For last night’s American Idol homecoming, we all saw the return of last season’s runner up Crystal Bowersox. To help fill the sixty minutes of television, the country singer performed her single “Ridin’ with the Radio”. It was a decent performance from Crystal. Her vocals were on point but I don’t know. I’m just not all that excited about her. From having David Cook last week, Crystal was actually a let down this week. She looked good though. She finally had her braces removed and her hair looks clean – somewhat. What did you think of Crystal’s song and her performance on AI?

American Idol usually reserves the duets for when there are only 4 singers left on the show so I was a little surprised when they decided to do it for the top 6. There were some clear winners and clear losers on this week’s performance night but I could always be proven wrong by how America decided to vote. The clear winner for me (and apparently Randy Jackson too) was James Durbin. His performance of “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” had me reminded of David Cook’s performance of “Always Be My Baby”. It was that good. Clear loser was Jacob Lusk. His performance of “Oh No, Not My Baby” is just the same old thing. I think he peaked weeks ago and has nothing left to offer. Who did you vote for?

The show has apparently prepared a special little treat for its viewers for next week. Not only is Katy Perry going to be lly Clarksoideoing her new single “E.T.” on next week’s American Idol, but season seven winner David Cook will also be performing his new single “The Last Goodbye”. And just so Katy Perry feels right at home the seven remaining contestants will have to chose their next performance piece from the 21st century and no earlier. It will be interesting to see what the contestants will go for as the spots grow ever so few and the competition more and more ruthless.

After her very surprising elimination from the show, the American Idol contestant was of course swamped with a myriad of questions, all basically asking the same things: why was she eliminated so soon and other some such. When asked whether she would’ve done anything different on the show if she had the chance, Pia Toscano replied the following: “Absolutely not. If you make a mistake, it’s just helping you grow. I wouldn’t change a thing. I truly agree with everything the judges said to me, all their constructive criticism. I’ve tried to work on my weaknesses and I’ll continue to do so.” Well it’s good to see that she’s keeping her head up above the water. Pia Toscano needn’t worry… this might very well just be the beginning of her new career… and there’s always the American Idol summer tour to look forward to.

There is a purpose to the bottom three on American Idol and that purpose is to completely shatter somebody’s dream of becoming the next idol. On last night’s episode that somebody was Karen Rodriguez who was already on her second run on the bottom three and her last. The judges gave her a chance to redeem herself and Karen Rodriguez chose to sing Mariah Carey’s “Hero” but apparently to no avail. The judges didn’t use their save and it turned out to be the end of the line for Karen Rodriguez. It would appear that Haley Reinhart is next on the list unless she finds a way to significantly improve her performances.

The American Idol contestant has apparently made a choice that might just spell the end of her journey on the contest. For her year of birth song, Haley Reinhart chose “I’ll be your Baby Tonight” by Whitney Houston. Even though she did manage to give a really good vocal performance, her stage performance wasn’t really up to par. The judges commented on the fact that Haley Reinhart doesn’t seem to be too confident with what she’s doing, especially Randy Jackson. However they also seemed to be pretty satisfied with her vocals, but on this stage of American Idol that probably just isn’t going to do the trick anymore.

The Top 24 of American Idol has been revealed and all I could think about is why are there so many guys who made the cut that are a-holes? Clint Jun Gamboa, James Durbin, Jovany Baretto and Jordan Dorsey are so hard to like. How do the producers think they will get more people to watch and vote? Can’t we trade them for Jacee and Colton? America loves Jacee so he’s a big ratings pull and Colton is incredibly marketable and talented. But then I realized that they’re trying to get a girl to win this season. I’m sorry but I think AI made a huge mistake.
American Idol top 24 season 10
The last episode of city to city American Idol auditions came and went this week and let me tell you, if they had Chris Medina show up to this one, it would probably be the most dramatic hour of reality TV any of us had ever seen. San Francisco had a lot of golden voices that were given the pass to Hollywood but it was the back stories of triumph over tragedy that really got people to notice. There was also flatulence, bird guano, shower singer, a singing monkey, an Autobot, a sexy police officer and two faux rock stars. Do you think the next winner of American Idol is from San Francisco?

It would appear that all of the talent has moved from Los Angeles into Nashville and Austin and any other place in the US. Normally one would expect the American Idol auditions there to yield up a very important amount of extra Hollywood contestants, but as it turns out only a handful made the cut. And of them probably the most promising was Jacob Lusk, a young man that can sing Aretha Franklin like nobody else. The judges seemed to like it too and Jacob Lusk might just be of those contestants you’ll see going to the final rounds of the contest.
