Despite their split with former front man Steven Page, the Barenaked Ladies are pushing forward with a new album. Co-founder Ed Robertson said “We’re really excited about the future. Certainly it’s the end of an era, but things change and the creative process is always changing. We’re really excited about getting into the studio and exploring that.” The band is planning on going into a recording studio in April and aims for a fall release and could only reveal that they are working with a very fancy producer. And while Ed said that it was difficult to see their fans freak out about the split, he encouraged fans “to try not to draw any conclusions yet. We’re going to go in and make a great album, and we’re going to go out and do a bunch of great shows. That’s what we plan to do.”
Barenaked Ladies’ singer and guitarist Steven Page could get in the clear of drug charges if he stays away from the white snortable stuff for six months. Last week, in court in upstate New York, the musician had his felony cocaine possession hacked down to a misdemeanor. He was also granted something called “an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal” which means that the misdemeanor drug rap he’s still facing can get dismissed all together if he stays out of trouble for six months. And I thought only the Brits were this easy on their drug addicts. This is why people should stop wondering how Amy Winehouse came about being our beloved crackie.
Barenaked Ladies singer Ed Robertson was involved in a float-plane crash north of Bancroft, Canada last weekend. The singer is lucky to be alive. His plane went down in the woods north of Bancroft early Sunday afternoon. Adam Smith, a spokesman for the band says “Everyone is fine and that is the important thing. That’s all the comment we have at this time.” A police spokesperson added a couple more details saying “At 12:30 p.m. a Cessna 206 was taking off from Baptiste Lake, lost airspeed and entered a wooded area west of the lake.” The plane was reportedly totalled but all four passengers managed to walk out of the woods and soon reported the crash.
Define bad timing and you have the Barenaked Ladies right under the definition. The band’s front man Steven page and the rest of the group are part of the Disney Block Party tour this summer. They’re going to be playing for families in the US in July to August. According to the band’s bio on the tour’s website, the Barenaked Ladies released a kids’ album in May 2008. A rock and roll band that makes kiddie album – you don’t see much of that. There’s no word on whether or not Disney will cut the band from the tour in light of Steven’s drug bust. They should though.
