Beastie Boy Adam Yauch is battling cancer, it was announced last night (Mon).

The musician and filmmaker has revealed he has a ‘very treatable’ cancerous tumour in his salivary gland.

The news has forced the band to cancel its summer tour dates and put back the release of an album.

Yauch, 43, will require surgery and other treatments for the disease, which is confined to one area.

He talked about his diagnosis in a video posted online by the Beastie Boys.

“It’s a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because I was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later,” Yauch said in a statement.

Noel Gallagher struggled to name the new Oasis album.

The guitarist admits the title for the band’s upcoming LP ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ was chosen because the group couldn’t think of anything else.

He said: “I couldn’t think of any ideas and then somebody had just taken bits of the lyrics out and ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ was what came up. ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ is not the best one but it was the best title on a day when we had to choose one. Originally it was going to be called ‘Bag It Up’ and then it was going to be called ‘Shock of the Lightning’ and then it was going to be called ‘Standing On The Edge Of The Noise’.”

Noel – who plays drums on several tracks on the album – insists the title will sound better if people like the new songs. He said: “I was like, ‘You know what? Titles become themselves.’ ”Definitely Maybe’ isn’t a great title but if the album is good enough it’ll become itself.”

‘Dig Out Your Soul’ – which Noel claims is a reference to soul music – is released on October 6.

The Beastie Boys are moving ahead with plans for a vocal version of their latest album, the all-instrumental “The Mix-Up.” Adam “MCA” Yauch said the trio is “talking to some different artists who might do kinda like remixes and put vocals on it, so it wouldn’t be us doing vocals on it.

It would be kind of like a different version of the album, with a bunch of people guesting on it.”

Among those in the loop, according to Yauch, are M.I.A., Lily Allen and Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker — “a bunch of British people,” Yauch told Billboard.com. “It’ll be interesting to see what they do with the stuff.”

That might not be the only outgrowth of the “The Mix-Up,” which Yauch, Mike “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz released in June. Yauch said the Beasties have an idea for a visual version of the album as well, incorporating images from the group’s touring to support “The Mix-Up.”

“We’ve been traveling with a Super 8 camera,” he said, “and a lot of times we’ll just make something. While we were in Singapore we filmed stuff, and in Australia and different places. We’re talking about cutting it together into a full-length film that kinda goes the length of the album.”

Yauch said there are no plans to document the tour with a live album or DVD. After the trek wraps September 27 in Chicago, the Beasties plan to return to the studio.
