The two singers, Chris Martin from Coldplay and Gary Barlow from recently reunited Take That, have apparently entered a bit of a duel as to which of them is the better artist. A source said this about this little conflict: “It was all on jest as they’ve developed a surprisingly strong friendship despite being from very different pop and rock worlds. Each has racked up plenty of famous songs, but they eventually decided to call it even.” They probably called it even only for the time being… the battle has just begun! Still, statistically, Take That are way ahead of Coldplay so, at least for the moment, Chris Martin better swallow it and bow down to his new lord and master!

Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends the Coldplay album from last year has topped the charts for being the best selling album of 2008 worldwide as per figure compiled in the month of January. The second stop was grabbed by veteran rockers AC/DC who released Black Ice their 15th studio album.

According to IFPI, the world’s body that represents the recording industry worldwide the band sold 6.8 million copies for the period ended 2008. Gee man these are really awesome figures yet papers and the internet rarely cover artist as much as they would cover Britney Spears, Madonna or a Jay-Z.

But for understandable reason Britney Spears and Madonna or for that matter Jay-Z are covered extensively because apart from the great music they make they also have a lot of things going on in their personal lives which make them interesting character to know and read about.

While groups like Radiohead and Coldplay are pure entertainers as in they create great music and then do their bit for album publicity but their private life isn’t a gossip topic in every tabloid.

Alex James, bassist in “The Blur”, owned a record company with a few friends back in the nineties and he recently stated that they didn’t sign a record deal with Coldplay back then because they considered them just ordinary. Alex James’ exact words were: “I went to see Coldplay with Damien Hirst and Joe Strummer – my fellow record company executives – and we all thought they were ordinary and passed on them. I think everyone did, except Parlophone, just like what happened with The Beatles – and Blur!” And the whole fortune went down the drain for Alex James and his buddies, apparently. So sad… oh well, who could’ve predicted that the general market would be interested in ordinary bands with ordinary songs that have nothing to stand out with? Who indeed…

Rumors have been going around that Gwyneth Paltrow and her hubby, Coldplay front man, Chris Martin are having some marriage problems. The actress’ mom has spoken out about it though saying that the rumors aren’t true. Blythe Danner reacts to the comment that the couple hasn’t been photographed together in months saying “They don’t take pictures together if they can avoid it. It’s a strategy. They don’t want the pandemonium.” Mom says that they are just fine and that “They’re staying in England for the new year. Then coming here.” I think she’s just lying to protect Gwyneth and her grand kids.

Rock guitar icon Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for copyright infringement. In a suit filed last week in Los Angeles federal court, the guitarist claims that the band’s hit song ‘Viva La Vida’ contains substantial original portions of his 2004 instrumental ‘If I Could Fly’. Satriani is seeking a jury trial, damages and any and all profits connected to the alleged plagiarism. Neither side has been reached for comment as of yet. I listened to the tracks and there are some similarities but it will be up to a jury to decide if Satriani will be making any dough off of Coldplay.

The singer from Coldplay would like to be immortalized in wax at the famous Madame Toussaud’s. He had this to say about it: “What will the Coldplay legacy be? I would love to get into Madame Tussauds but it’s never going to happen. I don’t think we will be remembered. Somebody else will come along. That’s the best thing about music, it’s always evolving. Maybe we’ll get covered occasionally on a ferry with a guy playing a keyboard and his wife singing or something!” Sure, dude, that’s why nobody remember Led Zeppelin nowadays… or any other band that made a difference, just because music keeps evolving. Well, all of this just goes to show how highly Chris actually thinks of Coldplay’s music. I have only this to say in what concerns his immortality: wax melts very easily, the memory of a good song can last just a little bit longer.

Coldplay has released new music videos for their new single ‘Viva La Vida’ which comes off their latest album of the same name. And before you think that there was a typo, there’s not. The band really did release two new videos. One is directed by Hype Williams while the other is a video cover version that the band themselves “made out of Depeche Mode and the genius of Anton Corbija”. Whichever version you preferred, ‘Viva La Vida’ is definitely one of the strongest tracks on the album. The fact that it merited having two videos for it is enough of an explanation.

coldplay-world-tour.jpg

Coldplay kicked off their world tour in spectacular fashion — after ditching the electronic wizardry they just spent six months creating.

The lads took the brave decision to sack-off the expensive computer graphics and video screens just days before the start of their gruelling 67-date Viva La Vida campaign.

And it wasn’t missed for an instant.

At their dress rehearsal concert at Wembley Arena last month they relied heavily on a constant, dizzying stream of film clips and visual trickery to accompany the music. But in LA they dropped the hi-tech screen until the final two songs.

Instead a giant canvas of the album artwork hid it for the majority of the gig and the stage was lit by basic, subtle lighting.

This is an era when arena acts such as Kanye West — who was in the audience — spend bags of cash on digital displays to wow fans and outdo rivals. But scrapping the gadgetry in favor of a more intimate feel was a brilliant move.

I think the expression is “less is more”.

It made the arena feel a quarter of the size but the crowd enjoyed it four times as much. And as a result it seems the band will abandon the technology for the rest of the tour — and why would they need it when Chris Martin has matured into the ultimate frontman.

The sound of 18,000 Americans roaring along to anthems In My Place and Viva La Vida was incredible.

Elated Chris thanked the crowd for their part in a special night as they finally took their record-smashing Viva La Vida album on the road.

He said: “We couldn’t have asked for anything better on a hot July night in LA. Some audiences are s*** and we have to lie. But between you and me, you’re grade A. This is the first night of the tour since we became the new version of the band. This is where we first started our journey in America so we couldn’t think of anywhere we’d rather be.”

Coldplay and their record label are giving the little people a chance to open for the group in San Jose, Chicago, Philadelphia, Hartford, Washington DC and Boston by entering an online contest. To enter, bands need to submit an original performance via YouTube. But before you enter, read the fine print closely as your YouTube performance can be used in ways that you’re not happy with and you won’t be able to do anything about it. There’s even a rule that the record company can place your song on a compilation album and they wouldn’t be required to pay a cent. Also, by submitting you performance, the record label has the exclusive option to sign your band to a crappy deal. Coldplay may be a big band but they’re not worth selling your soul.

Chris Martin believes Coldplay have failed as a band — because they are not big enough in the karaoke market yet.

The frontman has made some pretty outrageous comments recently — like confessing to a secret love of Westlife and Peter Andre. But aiming for success with singalong sessions is the most odd yet.

He said: “I’m really determined there should be more Coldplay songs in karaoke bars. I’ve been into them and you open the lyrics book and there are a million Beatles songs. There’s dozens of Abba, Culture Club or even Bucks Fizz, but Coldplay? There will be two or at best three. If we could just get eight in every bar worldwide I’d be happy. I would know we’ve made it. I think there are three karaoke possibilities on Viva La Vida. It surely has to be the ultimate measure of success.”

Chris readily admits his own attempt at karaoke is less than stellar.

He added: “I got up in a bar one night with my mate Tim Wheeler (from Ash) and we chose Bohemian Rhapsody. It was appalling.”

According to reports, we can now own the new Coldplay album ‘Viva La Vida’ for half the usual price. Whatever it takes to publicize and sell albums, right? The band recently announced a buy one get one free offer on internet downloads saying “Buy one get one free, it comes from working in Kwik Save (British budget supermarket), I think. As I said before nobody buys albums any more, certainly no body buys full albums and we’ve made an album that you have to have from start to finish.” Record stores must be fuming about this. Why buy the release in stores when you can get it for half the price online?

First there was Radiohead and then Oasis. Metallica says they’re about to do it and now, Coldplay wants a piece of the action too. The UK band is giving away their music for free! Starting this past Tuesday at 12:15 PM UK time, Coldplay’s new song ‘Violet 4:11’ could be downloaded for one week only at Coldplay.com. In addition to that, London and New York City based fans will get free shows. There’s no clue as to whether any more songs will be for free but their new album ‘Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends’ will drop on June 12.
