This is a limited edition copy of "A Chapter on Autography" by EDGAR ALLAN POE with dust jacket. 1926 1st edition; Published at the Sign of the Cupid and Lion by Lincoln MacVeagh at the Dial Press; New York. Limited edition of only 750 copies printed - this copy is unnumbered. With a frontispiece engraving of Poe. Subjects include Washington Irving, L.H. Sigourney, William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Fenimore Cooper, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Horace Greeley, John Greenleaf Whittier, John Quincy Adams...and many more. Edited by Don C. Seitz. The dust jacket is un-clipped with the original $4.00 price on the front flap.

From the dust jacket: "A remarkable piece of writing, never thoroughly edited before and omitted from most editions of Poe's works, is here presented in attractive form. It will constitute a genuine addition to any Poe collection. For the general reader, the estimates which Poe gives of his celebrated contemporaries will provide interest, and sometimes astonishment; while the host of forgotten writers here gravely considered, whose titles Mr. Seitz has been at such pains to search, will afford considerable amusement as eloquent testimony to the vanity of literary reputation.

From 2024 the Foreword: "No writer of modern times had pushed research to a greater extent on this interesting subject of autograph, than Edgar Allan Poe. The following remarks on the handwriting and character of several of our American literati, were written and published many years ago by the late Mr. Poe, but for some reason were omitted from the collected works of that ingenious and brilliant author, by his editor."

Condition:
Clean covers and spine; some very light wear to the corners; bright gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice pages - clean with only some foxing at the outer margin of pages 34, 35 and 51. Tanning along the perimeter of the frontispiece from the tissue paper over it. Overall the book is in very good condition. The dust jacket has a tiny tear and small stain at the bottom of the spine, and a larger stain at the top of the spine...the stains are from strips of adhesive on the back of the jacket (the adhesives may be part of the clear dust jacket protective sleeve, not shown).
