An original hand signed 1863 note issued by “The State of Louisiana” from Shreveport, Louisiana. The “Five Dollars” currency has the hand inscribed serial number “1867” at right side. It was printed on both sides.
The original lead bullets were excavated from the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Battlefields near Fredericksburg, Virginia. They were all made in iron molds and would have used a paper cartridge. The .58 rifle and were made for the Springfield rifle and along with the .52 Sharps were Federal issue. The .44 Colt and .69 musket ball could have used by either side. The white patina is due to oxidation in the ground.
The Wilderness, near Fredericksburg, Virginia, was the first battle in 1864 between General Grant's “Army of the Potomac” and General Lee's “Army of Northern Virginia”. It was the beginning of what would be called Grant's “Overland Campaign” to take the Confederate capitol at Richmond. The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was the second major battle in the Campaign. Following the bloody but inconclusive Battle of the Wilderness, Grant's army disengaged from General Robert E. Lee's army and moved to the southeast. Elements of Lee's army beat the Union army to 2024 the critical crossroads of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, and began entrenching. Fighting occurred on and off from May 8 through May 21, 1864.
The hand made solid Oak frame is 9 x 12 (glass size). The mat color is maroon. All of the work was done in our cabinet shop here in Fredericksburg, Virginia by my wife and I.
All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original Civil War issue or as stated. A hand signed and dated “Letter of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph of the item purchased.
