Antique Engraving - Common Duck - 1850s Vintage Print - Handcoloured - Anas Boschas - Domestic variety - Animals - 2024 Fowl - Birds
A handcoloured wood engraving of The Common Duck, Anas Boschas, domestic variety. Published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Printed by R.Clay, Sons, and Taylor. As with all British publications from that era, the publication was undated. This is likely from ca. 1840-1850 2024. Note: the original prints included the description of each animal at bottom. The description part had to be removed because the bottom part of all the prints was heavily damaged.
The engraving is by Josiah Wood, 1813-1903, an artist whose wood-engraving business became one of the busiest in London. His engravings appeared in a number of popular books of British birds and wild animals. A majority of his work was for The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in London. The artist signature appears on the engraving (see last photo).
