Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink, and celebration. While most are familiar with the celebration of Halloween on October 31, November 2 is "All Souls Day" or the "Day of the Dead". According to tradition, the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of children can rejoin their families for 24 hours. The spirits of adults can do the same on November 2. The well-known film "Cocoa" can give you a better glimpse into the tradition. The holiday is a blend of Mesoamerican rituals, European religion, and Spanish culture, and is celebrated each year from October 31-November 2. Inspiration for this wreath is a takeaway from the traditional colors and sugar skulls in pictures and movies I have seen regarding the celebration. The most prominent symbols related to the Day of the Dead are calacas (skeletons) and calaveras (skulls) with the skulls applied as decorative elements on this wreath.
What a lovely way to greet you and your guests as you enter your home and honor the tradition of the holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink, and celebration.
The base of the wreath is a grapevine that has been spray-painted black, with a paper mache mask attached at the top center of the wreath. The mask is painted with a traditional face paint design and sugar skulls used for the holiday; a few rhinestones have been added to enhance the painted features. The rest of the wreath is filled with a variety of colorful florals, greenery, and a large festive bow. The florals include orange and fuchsia hibiscus, lime, teal, and lime green roses, yellow ranunculus, lime peonies, and dark purple thistles. The bow that sits below the mask is made with assorted wired ribbons that include a 2.5" canvas turquoise, 1.5" glittery purple, 1.5" canvas fuchsia, and 1.5" glittery lime green.
Q&A
Q. What wreath size should you select for your door?
A. Here are a few suggestions and rules of thumb you can reference when choosing a wreath for your door.
For a "Classic Look" on a typical 36" wide door, a wreath that measures between 20-26" in diameter is the wreath for you.
If you want to make a statement and go bold and festive, look for a wreath measuring a bit larger than the classic with sizes between 28"-30" in diameter.
If your door is larger than a standard 36" width; choose a wreath proportionally larger with sizes ranging from 30" to 36" in diameter. If it is smaller you will want to look at a more petite size wreath to complement its proportions.
If you choose to display it outside, provide your wreath protection from contact with harsh elements such as sun, rain, wind, or freezing weather. Prolonged exposure to these elements will damage your wreath or cause it to fade so it's best to display it in a covered area if possible.
The overall measurement of this lovely wreath is approximately 21" W x 22" L x 7" deep. The ribbon and some of the wispy florals may extend a tad beyond the fullest area of 21 x 22". The size works nicely on a standard-sized front door (36"W), as you can see in the provided photo and video.
