The works constitute numbers XX and XL in the series of the Navy Records Society. The society publish rare and original documents on naval history. Founded in 1893 by Sir John Knox Laughton and Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge, it has to this day published over 160 volumes.
In his preface, Laughton writes, "In the course of the last few years I have...collected a variety of documents, individually too short for a volume, and yet of such interest to render it very desirable to lay them before the society." These volumes were the result. He also says of the 'Voyage to Cadiz', found in volume I, that it "by itself, with its unique map and representations of early divisional flags...[makes] the volume noteworthy."
These particular copies previously belonged to A. M. Jones, Captain RN, and bear his signature to the front free endpapers.
An invaluable resource for historians of the period, or for those with an interest in the history of the Royal Navy.
