Chicago Pickard and Brauer Studio artist, Arnold Rhodes beautiful soft pastel vellum style "Scenes of Italy" hand painted plates. Each 10 3/4"diameter plate edge hand signed: A. Rhodes. Trimmed in 24K gold gilt. Likely sold by Missouri NYC Mermod Jaccard King Jewelry Company department stores. To preserve finish, use of eating utensils not recommended. Total collection of 12 plates, each sold separate.

Plates are without utensil scratches, chips or damage. Beautiful condition. Each plate available from pull-down menu.


"Born in England in 1891, Arnold Rhodes emigrated to the States as an 18 year old in 1909. He originally lived with his brother- In-law, Pickard Artist, Edward Challinor, who at the time worked for one of Pickard Studio major competitors; Julius Brauer Studio of Chicago. Challinor got young Arnold his 1st job as an artist at the Brauer Studio. Rhodes developed extensive experience working for some of Chicago's best decorating Studios including Osborne, Stouffer, Tolpin, and Pickard [twice]. Additionally, over the years Rhodes did a considerable amount of freelancing in Chicago Suburb; Downers Grove. Rhodes works are fairly diversified with most of it being floral, however, he was well known for his scenic and a few animal pieces. Once retired he was commissioned by the famous Bailey, Banks, & Biddle of Philadelphia to do some top of the line Scenic Service Plates. Alan Reed's Pickard Collectors Book has numerous photographic examples of his fine works as well as a bio."
