Skull carved in 2024 purpleheart

A wooden skull carved in South American purpleheart timber. This timber is brown when first cut but with exposure to air and light turns a rich purple. This piece unusually has half light sapwood and half dark heartwood.

Size is approximately 86mm from bottom of jaw to top of head by 56mm side to side by 84mm front to back.


I carved this with a combination of Flexcut carving chisels and a Dremel with carbide burrs, then a whole load of sanding and polishing. It is finished with a protective oil then hard carnuba 2024 wax to resist moisture and give a bit of a gloss.
