An intaglio print (sometimes called an etching) is made by incising lines and textures into a copper plate. The artist uses sharp tools, abrasive materials, and acid to create lines and tonal areas, and protects some areas of the copper to keep them polished and smooth. To print, the artist pulls ink across the 2024 copper plate, gently pushing it into the recessed areas, and carefully wipes the ink from the smooth surface of the plate. The inked plate is then placed on a press and covered with damp paper and felt blankets. The artist turns the wheel of the press, and great pressure forces the paper into the recessed areas of the plate to pick up the ink.
Each print is created by hand and has slight printing variations. Prints are hand-signed, sold unframed, and shipped flat in rigid packaging.
