This is a mid-century TV lamp base made in kitschy figural fish form. There is a hole drilled into the lower back through which you would run a socket wire - you can easily buy what you need at your local hardware store to turn this into a functioning lamp. The piece is unsigned, but this type of lamp base is well documented to have been made in Vallauris, France during the 1950s. Vallauris is a centre of pottery making due to its supply of clay and is where Picasso set up his pottery studio. The sails are made of a fibreglass type of shade. The lamp depicts a larger fish with two smaller fish in its centre cavity. It is glazed in orange, green and red and hand painted generously in gold paint. The piece measures 14” in length, 9 3/4” in height at the tail, has a width of 8 3/4” and has a depth of about 6” due to its curvature. It is in excellent condition as it was never used.
