The Covers Feature Chiyogami Katazome Shi Papers in Aizome Indigo Blue Irises along a Marshy Water Garden traversed by the zig-zagging "Wooden Bridges of Eight". The Kakitsubata Irises reference the Tenth Century Japanese Tale of Ise. In this tale, an aristocratic poet, weary of the fashionable life in Kyoto, sets out on a long journey. He arrives at Yatsuhashi, where he sees the Irises in full bloom. The sight fills him with longing and love for his wife, Ise, back home in distant Kyoto. The Inside Covers Feature Nepalese Lami Li Lokta Fiber Paper in an Asian Cloud Pattern on a Sky Blue Background. This Asian Stylized Cloud Symbolizes Spiritual Ascent and Auspicious Bountiful Rain.
Beautiful and exceedingly rare Chiyogami Katazome Shi, stencil-dyed paper uses a time consuming starch-resist printing method. Katazome is a Japanese 15th century traditional print methodology. Modern printing techniques have now mostly replaced this completely handmade and very time consuming printing process. Handmade Japanese Chiyogami Shi paper is made with Durable High Quality Kozo / Mulberry Fiber. These classically stylized designs are often inspired by nature, and also by Japanese Folk Tales, as in this example. These intricate designs are also based in traditional historic Kimono fiber design.
