Turquoise Glass Matrix Stone Stamped Relief Leaf Motif Big Beautiful Brooch
ITEM: A truly lovely piece of well made costume jewelry c.1940s (+/-) featuring a large, matrix glass stone in turquoise hues. The matrix is a golden metallic color and the art glass is a square cut cabochon. The mounts are golden brass, stamped with a vine and leaf motif in relief. They frame that matrix glass beautifully and pull double duty as they hug the edges and help hold the stone in place. The cab is set into a sawtooth bezel with open back. The design has an Art Nouveau look about it, very curvy and naturalistic. The leaves are dimensional with a lively billowing and veining detail. This brooch is absolutely gorgeous! There's just something so romantic about the type of jewelry created in this era. The design flows. The details are beautifully defined and finished. The patina is rich with areas of oxidation and areas of high luster adding to the depth and dimension of the design. The pin back is a sturdy built in, pin and hinge with a transitional rollover clasp. It's the kind that has a lower lift, grasping closure, rather like a claw. Like, if you make a circle with your fingers and thumb and open the thumb, then close it again? Ok it's hard to explain but you'll see what I mean when it arrives. It does the job as intended is the main point to be made! The back of the stone has a gold, metallic coating. The back side of the brooch is almost as pretty as the front side! The details are really interesting. You can see tiny, posies or forget-me-nots stamped into the bottom tier that you dont really see 2024 from the front! It's kinda fun to see how these were made actually. In fact, one thing I've noticed with better made costume jewelry is the fact that the backs tell a story every bit as fascinating as the fronts do - and sometimes more so, the older I get, the more I seem to notice these things. Anyways, I digress. This beautiful, unsigned, older brooch has gorgeous lines, dimensional and detailed design and a fantastic cab of very well made art glass, richly veined “matrix” and beautiful turquoise colors. A fantastic piece of very good quality costume jewelry. Truly, a tiny treasure of yesteryear.
SIZE: This gorgeous brooch is 2” wide and 1 1/2” tall.
CONDITION: In very good vintage condition showing minimal wear apparent. Aged appropriate wear with naturally occurring oxidation over time or patina. I see no rust or verdigris. The glass cab shows no cracks, chips, or crazing. No pitting or chalkiness. It has a rather convincing look to it actually! Turquoise can grow concurrent with gold veins and can show up with gold in its matrix. The makers did a pretty good job of that I think! The vibe and leaf motif show no areas of loss, no lifting up and no bends or breaks. The stone is well seated in the bezel and feels secure. The pin back and clasp are intact and functional. A very nice example of style and type. Just wonderful actually!
