Antique French, green glass biscuit jar / barrel, hand painted with metal trims and pontil mark, circa 1900.
This is a very beautiful green glass jar with a detailed hand and trim. It appears to be hand decorated with thistles. On the base is a pontil mark, showing the glass was mouth blown. The glass is translucent and a very pretty shade. This style is very reminiscent of other French antique jars by Daum and Legras.
The jar is a very lovely item and was probably designed to hold biscuits. it does have a great age and probably had a lid which has been lost over the years. The lid would have likely been in metal, matching the handle and trim. It would make a good vase but for me it is beautiful just as it is.
In very good condition for its age, the jar has no cracks or chips. There are a few scratches on the paintwork and areas of wear but nothing to detract from its loveliness..
The metal work has a dark aged patina and the handle is in good working order. The dark metal offsets the pretty green very well.
A beautiful item, this striking antique jar is very decorative and catches the light beautifully. A 2024 fabulous addition to any home.
