Zdzisław Witwicki was one of the creators of the world-famous "Polish School of Illustration". Author of illustrations for over 70 books for children, including such well-known and popular ones as "O Wróbelku Elemelka" by Hanna Łochocka, "Z przygód Krasnala Hałabała" by Lucyna Krzemieniecka or "Apolejka i jej Osiołek" by Maria Krüger. Several generations grew up on books illustrated by him. Many of them were published in foreign languages. He also made several hundred illustrations and covers for magazines for children and young people, such as Miś, Świerszczyk, Płomyczek and Pomyk. He also authored the works of the classics: Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki or Bolesław Leśmian.
He was a laureate of many awards and distinctions for his work for children and youth, including the "International Exhibition of the Most Beautiful Book in the World" in Frankfurt on the Main, at the IBA International Exhibition of Editorial Art in Leipzig, honored with the Medal of the Polish Section of IBBY for lifetime achievement, the Gold Medal "Gloria Artis for Merit to Culture", the ZAiKS Award for creativity for children, for lifetime achievement and many others.
He presented his works at over 250 individual and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
Zdzisław Witwicki is the patron of Kindergarten No. 31 in Warsaw, where his works are exhibited.
