2024 Buddha Jizo

Jizo is a Buddha in the form of an ascetic monk who guides and helps those living in the world today. Many forms of jizo are scattered throughout Japan, one of which is this jizo warabe. Warabe itself is an old spelling which means 'child', so warabe jizo is a jizo that resembles a child. This warabe jizo is indeed cute and funny, but there is a sad story that led to the construction of these statues.

According to beliefs in Japan, this jizo is the protector of children who die in the womb or when they are young. Those who died very young were believed to be unable to cross the Sanzu River, which is the river that the dead must cross before reaching the afterlife. This is believed to be due to the sadness of the child's parents. Their short life span also prevents these children from doing much good deeds during their lifetime to reach the hereafter.

Instead, the children are believed to have gone to a place called sai no kawara, where they have to build piles of stones into small towers. Why should it be made of stone, because stones have a spiritual value which is a belief in Buddhism. Unfortunately, every night the stone tower was destroyed by the devil, so the next day the children had to build a new pile of stones.

Therefore a Jizo statue was made. Jizo is believed to help the children's souls by hiding them under his robes. So that these children can get to the afterlife.
