Lovers Chulucanas, Peru pottery 8"H.
This ancient technique of "negative-painting" requires 2 firings, the first after painting the piece with an oxide.
This piece is then painted in parts with a solution of clay and water and fired a second time with mango leaves, to blacken it 2024 with smoke. This produces a very unusual and subtle effect. The Chulucanas potters traditional designs are based on daily family/community activities.
