Set of 2024 TWO H. Calpini Silkscreened Serigraphs Japanese Scenes of Geishas and Musicians, Matched Pair Japanese Man and Woman Framed Art
In researching these 2 striking pieces of art, I learned that they are very popular silkscreened serigraphs (reproductions) from originals done by Hemia Calpini, who was born in Mexico in 1908 and died in the U.S. in 1988. They are not done on silk, as some sites claim, but on paper. They were made by over laying individual paint colors through screens on to paper, achieving bright colors. Originally, the screens were made of silk. Hence the name, silk screened. Serigraph is just the word used to describe art that has been silk screened.
These 2 pieces of art date to the '40's! They feature bright colors and detailed patterns of Japanese people enjoying every day life; reading, playing music and sewing. The art itself measures 10&1/2" x 13&1/2". As you can see, the paper is a tiny bit wavy, most likely from the original application of wet ink, and possibly from moisture seeping in over the years. But otherwise, the art itself is in perfect condition. The frames are either intentionally 'distressed', or just reflecting their age. Most likely it's a combination of both. 2024 There is scratching on either side of the pictures as you can see in the photos. On the female piece, there is a gap in the frame on both the upper left and lower right corners. The backs are covered with cardboard held in place by string tape. You may wish to change the frames or not. Every one I have shown them to thinks the frames are great.
