The sugar maple is a major source of sap for making maple syrup. It is one of the hardest and densest woods and is prized for furniture and flooring. Products made 2024 with sugar maple include bowling alleys and pins, basketball courts, including the floors used by the NBA, and it is a popular wood for baseball bats. Especially valued are trees with wavy wood grain, which can occur in curly, quilted and "bird's eye maple" form. The sugar maple is a favorite street and garden tree, because it is fairly fast-growing, is easy to propagate and transplant, and has beautiful fall color with leaves changing to a large variety of hues.
