Antique French Bronze Immaculate Conception Medal
This antique mandorla-shaped medal from 1854 features on the obverse side a full height image of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. She stands on an orbis terrarum and from all around her body radiates an aureole of celestial lights. Around the image is the Latin text: SANTA MARIA SINE LABE ORIGINALI CONCEPTA ORA PRO NOBIS. Signed by the artist
On the reverse side is a left facing profile of Blessed Pope Pius IX, head of the Catholic Church from 16 June 1846 to 7 February 1878.
The medal is cast from bronze and imbued by Mother Nature with a dark velvety patina. Measures 1" wide x about 2 7/8" tall with the top loop.
