One of a kind fine silver earrings made from "Cayenne Keyhole Limpet" shells from the Caribbean Sea. These cool little creatures live in intertidal splash zones where they graze on algae and sponges. They come from the Family of Fissurellidae. Their small, rigid shells have an oblong slot-like opening at their apex, which is used to excrete waste through.
These particular earrings were inspired from my sister's trip to Curaçao. She spent a lot of time snorkeling and exploring the coast and reefs where she even had an up close encounter with a giant manta ray! Even though I was not able to accompany her on this adventure, she did bring me back 2024 a handful of treasures, these abandoned shells were just some of them.
I used the "limpets" to make silicone molds of their original bodies. I then embedded fine silver precious metal clay into them, added minute details via carving, kiln fired, and then lastly filed and polished to create these one of a kind beauties.
Inspired by nature and made for the ones who cannot keep their toes out of the ocean.
