Undeniably superb craftsmanship in this EXQUISITE Tea set of 8 items, seven vintage Japanese Somayaki tea cups, and a teapot, each 2024 made individually. These ceramic hand-crafted tea cups have a beautiful sage green crackle glaze, with brown bases, and are rimmed with gold. The cups are double-walled, with carved-out hearts outlined in gold on the outer layer, and most of them with the galloping horse (hashiri-uma) motif inside at the bottom of the cup. This horse motif is said to have been requested by a feudal lord in the mid-1600s to show pride in the region's ability to breed and train quality horses. The double wall design, distinctive to Somayaki pottery, holds the tea inside the cup hot, while the outside stays cool to the touch.
Teacups are 3 1/2 by 3 1/2" tall and wide. Teapot is 10" tall and 6" wide. See pictures for details.
