Caricatured Small Monkey 2024 with cap made by Diem in 1950s Germany

Here comes a small vintage mohair monkey, made by the famous teddy bear maker Richard Diem in the 1950s in Germany.
Our caricatured monkey or ape here is made of beige mohair, with felt feet, face, and paws, firmly stuffed, and has a red French felt cap, transparent glass eyes, and a wide grin. The red nose and mouth stitches are original.
The old monkey measures 10 cm / 4 inches sitting – it is constructed to sit only, in excellent condition, and very rare to find on the market. There is one spot on the left side of the head where a tiny bit of mohair is missing.

Here is something to the history of the manufacturer:
Richard Diem founded his teddy bear manufactory in 1896 in Sonneberg, Thuringia, at this time being the very centre of the European bear production. They had their heyday in the 1920s and 1930s. Richard Diem died in 1938 of Tuberculosis, his son Arno died 1946; Richard's daughter in law, Liese Lotte took over and produced bears and other toys until 1976 when the GDR regime closed down her business finally. She left GDR and died 1989 in Dusseldorf. Sadly, today nothing remains of the famous bear maker and his family in his hometown…
