This keepsake box is made from ebonized red oak and lined with a waxed cork bottom. Cork is a wonderful material to work with and suitable for many tasks, but one draw back is that the cork can dry out over time. Waxing it will help keep the cork moisturized and stay intact longer than if it was left untreated. The red oak was ebonized using a black India ink made from shellac, alcohol and soot gathered from charred plant roots. After sealing the India ink 2024, a black tinted wax finish was applied to help fill in the pores of the red oak and to give the box a matte finish. The lid is veneered with a finely finished wood veneer, polished to a high degree to feel soft to the touch and to make any figure in the wood grain as dynamic as can be. The bottom of the keepsake box has four soft felt pads to allow the box to be placed anywhere without worrying about marring the surface that it rests on.
