This is a very rare 1930s Art Deco Compact or Dance Purse made by Mondaine, New York, USA. It's engraved inside: Penn State Junior Prom 1933!
Both the back and front are covered in black leather. On the cover is a small gold design of two people. There is a fabric or braided ribbon handle with gold clips and a push button clasp.
When opened , the cover holds a large beveled mirror that is broken. The base of the compact has three compartments. The first and 2024 largest compartment has a spring loaded cover, striped pattern cover which is engraved Penn State Junior Prom 1933 and signed MONDAINE New York U.S.A. This compartment possibly was to hold money. Two smaller compartments are for blush (face rouge) and powder (face powder) both are also marked Pats. Pending. The rouge inside the well looks unused or very lightly used and the powder is partially used and crumbling. They are missing the original powder puff applicators that clip into the covers.
Measures 4" x 3" x 1/2", 4" braided ribbon handle. This compact is in good vintage condition but is quite old, wearing of the leather. The Mirror has cracking and hazing, see photos.
