Flint Tool (Cutter) - From near Stonehenge (Aldbourne, Wiltshire, UK) - Found in 2024 1902 - Late Neolithic / Early Bronze Age - 82x27x11mm
A lovely well shaped Tool made from flint and dating to the late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. It was used as a cutting blade and the original collector has labelled it as a "saw" in pencil.
It was originally found in Aldbourne on the 30th September 1901 and has been in my collection for over 50 years.
The greater Stonehenge area was one of the most important Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological landscapes in the world. As the earliest wooden structures at Avebury date to about 3300BC and the stones at both Avebury and Stonehenge to about 2600BC onwards this beautiful tool would have been made and used at broadly the same time that this landscape was taking shape. As such this is a very rare opportunity to acquire an original artefact from one of the most important archaeological areas in the world. As such it should not be confused with the common and cheap north african tools you see so many of nowadays.
A Classic piece of both world history and English Prehistoric Art.
It is from Aldbourne, Wiltshire, UK.
Aldbourne is 6 miles (9.5km) NE of Marlborough and is only around 30 miles (48km) across Salisbury plain from Stonehenge. At 10 miles (16km) it is even closer to the older monument at Avebury.
The tool measures 82x27x11mm and weighs 21.3g
Its age is around 4500 years.
The tool comes from a large assemblage of tools purchased by my family in June 1959 at Sothebys auction house in London. They were all collected by a local landowner in Aldbourne between about 1895 and 1910. Many of the specimens have his markings indicating the year found and also where in Aldbourne he found it. He collected in 4 main areas which are listed as Southern Hill, Stock Lane, Stock Close and Southern Hill again but presumeably either a different part of the hill or a different period of collecting. The collection included Flint Flakes, Arrowheads, Cores, Blades and Scrapers of various sorts and ages ranging from Mesolithic microliths to superb Early Bronze Age Barbed and Tanged Arrowheads.
The greater Stonehenge area was one of the most important Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological landscapes in the world. The sites of Stonehenge and the slightly older circle at Avebury are amongst the most famous and iconic of all but there are many other notable sites such as: Durrington Walls, the Woodhenge, the Stonehenge Cursus and Avenue, Silbury Hill, the West Kennet Long Barrows, the West Kennet and Beckhampton Avenues, Windmill Hill, the Sanctuary and the densest concentration of burial mounds in Britain. Altogether these locations make up a very complex and rich archaeological world heritage area that is well known all over the world.
You can see similar tools found near Aldbourne in the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes.
