Alva Museum Replicas started designing decorative reproductions of antiquities and sculptures in the 1940's for marketing in museum gift stores. This treasure was made in 1974 apparently since that's when the ad pictured above was published. As the ad states this is in a collection “Golden Treasures Marco Polo Missed”. They are authorized ‘golden' replicas of ancient oriental works of art. “Cast from impressions of priceless museum pieces and hand finished to create the look of unique originals.”
Alva museum pieces were gold electroplated.

Subject: Replica Menuki Dragon necklace from ALVA Museum. The dragons have heavy gold plating. The dragon pendant is in excellent, clean, undamaged condition. The snake chain measures 20". The dragon pendant portion measures 2.75" X 1" and with the snake chain it measures 20” long.

Are dragons from Japan or China?
Chinese dragons and Japanese dragons are very similar, probably because much of Japan's dragon mythology derives from China. The primary difference between the two is that Japanese dragons usually have three toes on each foot while Chinese dragons most often have four.

DRAGON SYMBOLISM. The dragon corresponds to the season spring, the color green/blue, the element wood, and the virtue propriety; supports and maintains the country (controls rain, symbol of the Emperor's power). Often paired with the Phoenix, for the two represent both conflict and wedded bliss. In both China and Japan, dragon and phoenix symbolism is associated closely with the imperial family — the emperor (dragon) and the empress (phoenix). The dragon also represents the yang principle; often portrayed surrounded by water or clouds. In both Chinese and Japanese mythology, the dragon is closely associated with the watery realm, and four dragon kings are said to rule over the four seas.
